http://rockmusictimeline.com

This website has a really visually stimulating timeline that makes the history easier to understand. This website is http://rockmusictimeline.com. I really like this site because you can literally go year by year and find music that is important or relevant. The only issue I have with this site is that it classifies a lot of music in the rock category that I really wouldn't consider rock. Some examples of this are: Madonna, Natalie Merchant, and Whitney Houston. Some of the artists don't really have anything to do with rock in my opinion. You have to kind of navigate through that stuff which is kind of unfortunate.

This website offers more of a historical perspective on rock music. The website is http://scaruffi.com/history/cpt11.html. I have found this site to be very informative because it tackles rock by the decade. I found it very interesting to learn about the black artists that played rock originally. I had no idea that they were a part of the beginnings of this genre. You truly wouldn't expect that with what you would commonly expect from what rock bands and artists look like today.

http://forums.metacritic.com

There are just an endless amount of forums when you really start searching for them. As I weeded through them, another one that really stuck out to me was http://forums.metacritic.com. This was good because, not only are the discussion forums about rock and music in general, but there is also a search engine to allow you to find the topic that you want to talk about. I found this to be most helpful in my search for topics about bands that I enjoy. Click on the music tab and there you can find even more specific information on what you are looking for. Here, I have been able to research the history of some of the rock bands I enjoy.

As I was running out of resources that I knew about from experience I began to do some searches on google to figure out more ways to educate myself and I came across http://www.classicrockforums.com/forum/f47/indie-rock-education-2900/ which is great because this site allows people to post, have direct discussions, and debate styles of indie rock. It also gives great descriptions on the genre. It goes into depth on what indie rock really is. I really enjoy being able to converse with those that are not super educated in this field though. The non-bias perspective is what I search for.

www.pitchfork.com

Another good resource for music that I use is www.pitchfork.com. Not only do they interview artists, which I find helpful in learning and understanding music, but they also give you a heads up on what's new or what's about to come out. They have categories called best new music, best new album, and best new song. This allows you to listen to music and make a decision for yourself. In the columns and interviews you can find out more information about the genre of music you enjoy. Here I am able to find out more about Rock music and the inspiration behind the scenes.

An interview given by one of my favorite artists is found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CPkwyWRS2g&feature=related. This is an interview given by JR Richards who is the lead singer of the band Dishwalla. It's of him singing and interjecting with some thoughts and perspectives on who he is, how he was raised, and talking about a new album he is releasing. I truly enjoy his voice and being able to hear someone sing and play live. It will either make you appreciate them more(if they are good) or less (if they are bad).

www.wikipedia.org

Another website that I am constantly using is http://www.wikipedia.org/. I know this is a very general site but it has some hidden potential many people might not know about. What I often do here is search a band that I really enjoy. I read about them and how they got together and started making music. More times than not, Wikipedia will post who the bands influences are, what albums they have released, what upcoming albums they are about to release, and the bands current status. A lot of times I will find myself waiting for a certain band to drop a new album and sometimes I will be waiting in vain, because they have since broken up. Like I said, Wikipedia is extremely useful for that reason. They will say whether or not they are broken up and state the status of the band members. If one of the band members has moved on it will state that. I love getting the back stories on the bands most of all. It help me appreciate them as individuals, not just as a band.
Some of the wikidpedia websites I have visited are:

www.311.com

Another website that I follow pretty closely is www.311.com. This website is actually by a band that I have followed since my teenage years. The band is always updating it with upcoming shows, comments on events, and thoughts about their music and other music that interests them. I always find it interesting to find out what music the bands I am interested in are listening to. It gives me some perspective on what they are being influenced by when they create their music. 311 has a drummer by the name of Chad Sexton who is pretty renowned for his ability to play the drums. He often talks about the drums he uses to create the sounds he makes when playing live.

www.1077theend.com

A website that I often refer to in my search for new music is www.1077theend.com. This is a local radio station in my area that plays the genre of music that most interests me. I wouldn't go as far to say that I like everything that is on this station, but for me, it is a good source for new stuff. They are always posting concerts in the area. They also have blog postings by radio DJs that write about music that interests them. There is also a blog called "Locals Only" that is a great resource for local bands in the Seattle area. They also interview bands on the radio or in their blogs which enables you to learn more about the band, their genre, and the music they play.
